Plastic vs. Pulp Roll Cradles: A Side-By-Side Comparison

What Are Roll Cradles?

Roll cradles, sometimes called roll guards, stabilize rolled goods during shipping and storage. Mills and converters shipping paper, film, or nonwoven rolls typically choose between plastic or pulp to do that job.

Both are designed to keep rolls stable so they arrive undamaged and claims-free. The difference is in how much space the cradles take in your warehouse, how fast your crew packs a load, how they hold up in weather, and how many uses you get before recycling.

Nesting Efficiency and Storage Footprint

These two materials differ the most in the freight costs that it can take to get cradles to your facility and the warehouse space they take up once they arrive.

CradlePak cradles have thin, strong walls that nest tightly, so that more fit in the same space. We package up to 1,200 on a standard pallet, and the pallets can be double-stacked. Pulp cradles have thicker walls and a rougher surface, so they nest loosely and fit far fewer per pallet. For the same number of cradles, pulp can take up to four times the warehouse space.

What does that mean in practice? You store more cradles in less room, keep warehouse aisles clear, and receive more cradles per inbound truck, so you reorder less often. For a plant already short on floor space, you’ll feel the difference the day the first pallet of CradlePak cradles arrives.

Separation Speed When Packing Rolls

Packout speed comes down to how fast a worker can grab cradles, seat the roll(s), and move to the next. A cradle that fights you on the way out of the stack slows the whole line.

Moisture Resistance

Plastic roll cradles resist moisture, so they hold up outdoors and through changing weather without losing strength. When rolls sit outside or ship overseas in containers, CradlePak will not collapse from moisture, so the load is protected in transit and storage. Pulp cradles absorb moisture, which weakens the structure, reduces stability, and rules them out for outdoor or wet-weather shipping.

Paper and board rolls are moisture-sensitive to begin with. A damp roll develops wavy edges and stains and runs poorly on the customer’s press; a cradle that holds water against it poses its own damage risk. Plastic sheds water and remains sturdy under the roll.

Reuse and Recyclability

Both materials are recyclable. Pulp returns to the paper stream, and we mold CradlePak from recycled PET that is recyclable again at the end of its service life. The difference is how many cycles of use you get before that point.

  • Most cradles ship one way. The roll goes to your customer, who uses the goods and sets the cradle aside, so the cradle is protective packaging to them rather than a return item.
  • CradlePak holds its shape and load rating, so it can be reused when the return trip makes sense instead of being tossed. Even on a one-way trip, the recipient can drop it at a local recycler rather than pay to discard it.
  • Pulp cradles wear out faster. They crush under stack weight and soak up moisture, which shortens their usable life either way.

The total cost of a cradle depends on more than the per-unit price. It includes elements such as:

  • Warehouse space tied up in packaging inventory (storage)
  • Labor to separate and pack (packing speed)

Switching From Pulp to Plastic

Sizing a CradlePak starts with your roll’s outside diameter. A 9-inch roll, for example, fits our 48-5 (8 to 9.5 inches) or 42-4 (9 to 10.5 inches).

Where two sizes overlap, your pallet settles it; use the 48-5 on 48-inch pallets and the 42-4 on 42-inch pallets. Aim for a cradle whose range tops out near your roll OD so the roll sits snug in the saddle without extra play.
