Double Core Plugs for Vertical Roll Stacking

Recycled Plastic Plugs That Keep Stacked Rolls Safe

Double core plugs join two rolls core-to-core, so you can stack rolls on end in a straight column on a pallet and carry the weight through the cores. We mold them from recycled plastic in 3-inch and 6-inch sizes and keep both in stock.

How Double Core Plugs Protect Your Rolls

Rolls stacked on end press their full weight into the wound edges of the rolls below, and the column can drift off center in transit. A double core plug is two plugs molded back to back: one side fits into the top of the lower roll’s core, and the other fits into the bottom of the roll above. The cores lock in line, so the load passes core-to-core and the stack stays straight.

The plug walls also keep each core end round so it sits on shafts and chucks, and vertical stacking makes pallets faster to load and unload. We mold our plugs from recycled plastic that can be recycled again at most local recycling centers and holds up to the moisture that weakens wood and fiber plugs.

How Double Core Plugs Protect Your Rolls

Double Core Plug Sizes

Your core’s inside diameter (ID) sets the plug size, so a 3-inch core takes a 3-inch double plug. Cores often measure a few thousandths over their nominal size, so take the ID with calipers before you order. Our core plug size chart covers measuring in more detail. Exact outer diameter, wall, and flange dimensions are available on request.

If our stock 3 inch and 6 inch double plugs do not fit your requirement, we can mold a custom core plug in the size, color, and grade you need, with no order minimum.

Match the grade to how heavy the roll is and how roughly it gets handled.

Standard

Lighter rolls and everyday handling.

Heavy-duty

Thicker walls for heavier rolls or rougher transit.

Crush-resistant and extreme-duty

The heaviest rolls and the highest stacking and impact loads.

Rolls We Protect With Double Core Plugs

Double plugs are for rolls that store and ship on end.

Plastic Film and Flexible Packaging

Plastic Film and Flexible Packaging

Film rolls are often palletized on end. With a double plug between each roll, the weight above rides on the cores instead of pressing into the film edges, and each core stays round for the unwind shaft.

Narrow Paper and Paperboard Rolls

Narrow Paper and Paperboard Rolls

Slit paper and board rolls often go on the pallet several high. A double plug between each pair carries the stack weight through the cores.

Tape, Label, and Adhesive Stock

Tape, Label, and Adhesive Stock

Short rolls of tape and label stock stack in tall columns, and double plugs keep them straight from your packing line to your customer's dock.

Textiles and Nonwovens

Textiles and Nonwovens

Fabric and nonwoven rolls that ship on end get restacked several times between the mill and the cutting table. The plugs keep the column aligned through every move.

If a roll ships on its side, use single core plugs instead. If the face or edges of the roll can't touch anything, look at our pad plugs or roll suspension plugs.

Complete Your Roll Packaging

Double core plugs handle rolls that stand on end. For rolls that ship on their side, CradlePak plastic roll cradles support the outside of the roll so it can’t roll on a pallet or shift in a container, and single core plugs protect the core ends. If you ship both ways, we can quote plugs and cradles together. To match cradles to your roll’s outside diameter, see our roll cradle size guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a double core plug?

A double core plug is essentially two plastic core plugs molded back to back. One side fits into the top of one roll's core, and the other side fits into the bottom of the roll stacked above it, so rolls stack on end in a straight column on a pallet.

What size double core plug do I need?

Match the plug to your core's inside diameter: a 3-inch core takes a 3-inch double plug. We stock 3-inch and 6-inch double plugs and mold custom sizes with no order minimum. If your core falls between sizes, send us the measurement and we'll confirm the fit.

How many rolls can I stack with double core plugs?

That depends on your needs. Reach out for pricing and samples to confirm this for your specific application.

When should I use a double plug instead of a single plug?

Use double plugs when you stack rolls vertically on a pallet, so the load passes core-to-core. Use single plugs when a roll ships on its side in a cradle or lies flat.

Are Double Core Plugs Recyclable?

Yes. We mold them from recycled plastic, and they can be recycled again at most local recycling centers.
