Recycled Plastic Sleeves That Hold Rolls Off Every Surface
Roll suspension core plugs fit into each end of a roll's core and pair with end boards to hold the roll inside a frame, so its wound surface never touches the box, the pallet, or the next roll. They can also be used when a longer hub is needed to extend deeper into the core, along with a larger center hole to accommodate a shaft running through the core. We mold them from recycled plastic for 3-inch and 6-inch cores and keep both sizes in stock.
How Roll Suspension Core Plugs Protect Your Rolls
Fine film, foil, and coated stock need more than a padded box, since a single scuff or flat spot can mean a reject. A roll suspension plug is a heavier-duty core plug: longer than a standard plug, with a larger flange. It slides into the core end and sits in an end board, insert, or channel, so the roll hangs by its core and the wound surface stays clear of everything around it.
With rigid end boards on each roll, suspended rolls can stack and lock together for shipping without strapping the rolls themselves. The plug walls also hold the core round so it seats on shafts and chucks. We mold our plugs from recycled plastic that can be recycled again at most local recycling centers and holds up to the moisture that weakens wood and fiber plugs.
Roll Suspension Core Plug Sizes
Your core’s inside diameter (ID) sets the plug size, so a 3-inch core takes a 3-inch sleeve. Cores often measure a few thousandths over their nominal size, so take the ID with calipers before you order. Our core plug size chart covers measuring in more detail.
We stock two suspension sleeves:
- 3-inch sleeve for 3-inch cores.
- 6-inch sleeve for 6-inch cores.
Send us your roll’s weight and outside diameter along with the core ID, and we’ll confirm the fit. Exact outer diameter, wall, and flange dimensions are available on request.
If your core falls outside these sizes, we can mold a custom roll suspension plug in the size, color, and grade you need, with no order minimum.
Match the grade to how heavy the roll is and how roughly it gets handled.
Standard
Lighter rolls and everyday handling.
Heavy-duty
Thicker walls for heavier rolls or rougher transit.
Crush-resistant and extreme-duty
The heaviest rolls and the highest stacking and impact loads.
Rolls We Protect With Roll Suspension Core Plugs
Suspension plugs are mostly for rolls whose surface can't take any contact, and are also used for rolls that require a plug that goes deeper into the core and has a wider hole ID.
High-Value Plastic Film
Fine films mark easily, so the roll should hang by its core with every wrap clear of the box and pallet.
Foil
Foil rolls ship suspended, so the outer wraps never press against a box wall or pallet deck.
Coated and Laminated Stock
A scuff through a coating or laminate can get a whole roll rejected. With the roll held by its core in a frame, the coated surface stays clear in storage and in transit.
If your roll can take light contact, a single core plug or a pad plug costs less and protects the core just as well.

Complete Your Roll Packaging
Roll suspension plugs handle rolls that can’t touch anything. For sturdier rolls that ship on a pallet, CradlePak plastic roll cradles support the outside of the roll so it can’t roll or shift in a container, and single core plugs protect the core ends. If you ship both kinds of rolls, we can quote plugs and cradles together. To match cradles to your roll’s outside diameter, see our roll cradle size guide.
Other Core Plug Types
The right type depends on how much contact the roll’s outer surface can take, since core plugs, pad plugs, and roll suspension plugs each protect rolls in various ways. All four types are part of our plastic core plug line, molded from recycled plastic.
Single Core Plugs
Cap one end of a core, used in pairs for rolls that ship on their side in a cradle or lie flat.

Double Core Plugs
Join two rolls core-to-core so they stack vertically on a pallet without leaning.

Pad Plugs
Add a flat pad that holds the roll off the box floor and protects the outer wraps and edges.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a roll suspension core plug?
A roll suspension core plug is a longer core plug with a larger flange. It fits into each end of the core and can seat in an end board, so the roll hangs inside a frame and its surface never touches the box, the pallet, or another roll.
What size roll suspension core plug do I need?
Match the sleeve to your core's inside diameter: a 3-inch core takes a 3-inch sleeve. We stock sleeves for 3-inch and 6-inch cores and can mold custom sizes.
Do I need end boards?
If your application requires suspending the roll, yes. The plug suspends the roll only when it seats in an end board, insert, or channel. On its own, it protects the core like any other plug.
When should I use a suspension plug instead of a pad plug?
Use a pad plug for light- to medium-weight rolls boxed one at a time. Use a suspension plug when a roll can't touch any surface, your application requires a longer and wider hub,, or when you ship high-value rolls boxed or palletized as a full system.
Are roll suspension core plugs recyclable?
Yes. We mold them from recycled plastic, and they can be recycled again at most local recycling centers.
